What is VoIP?

Voip is a phone service over the Internet.

The way we make phone calls is changing fast these days. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and is a is a revolutionary technology that turns analogue audio signals into digital data that can be transferred over the internet.

If it is possible to turn analogue signals into digital data, then VOIP can turn a standard internet connection into a method for placing phone calls anywhere in the world virtually free, except for your internet service fee, enabling you to bypass the phone companies entirely. It is revolutionize the way the worlds phone systems operate.

It is the good news for consumers whom can make phone calls worldwide at a very low or no cost and with great features that traditional telephone company can't offer for free now. Unlike most traditional phone calls, calls based on VoIP technology are digitized, chopped up into tiny electronic packets and then sent to their destination over the public internet. That translates into more efficient use of bandwidth and lower costs for VoIP service providers.

There are many VOIP service providers that have been around for a while, and are growing steadily. Now the worlds leading telecommunications operators are setting up VOIP calling centers around the world and promoting the sales of VoIP Internet Phone systems.

Making Calls Over the Internet

If you have a high speed internet connection, like cable modem, DSL, or T1, you can use your high speed connection to make phone calls on the internet. instead of getting your dial tone from Verizon over the traditional phone network, you get your dial tone from your internet company.

VoIP converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. If you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is then converted back at the other end. It works by converting your phone calls to data packets and sends the information over your Internet connection, like email, and is received on the other end just like a regular phone call.

VoIP can allow you to make a call directly from a computer, a special VoIP phone, or a traditional phone using an adapter. If you make a call using a phone with an adapter, you'll be able to dial just as you always have, and the service provider may also provide a dial tone.

Mobile communication is also changing

An ever growing number of Internet connections around the world that let VoIP which turns Internet infrastructure to a giant global telephone network. As the development, VoIP in conjunction works with other technology such as wireless (Wi-Fi) that eventually could create a huge global mobile phone network.

Internet Telephony innovation forward are far beyond what we can imagine now. You may utilize those technology advances and enjoy the feature-rich, low cost and evolution communication tools.

What about voice quality?

With one of the better services and a nice fat broadband pipe, you're not likely to tell the difference between VoIP and a landline, and you'll certaintly find it better than your cell phone.

One caveat

One flaw, however, will always remain: VoIP only works if your broadband connection is working, and it's only as reliable as your broadband connection. If your power goes out, or your connection drops, so will your phone service. VoIP can be a great companion to a cell phone with an inexpensive local service plan, so you have an emergency fallback that's also easily portable.
