How VoIP Phone Call Works?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) uses your broadband Internet connection (cable, DSL or T1) to make and receive phone calls instead of your regular phone line. VoIP technology converts your voice into data so you can place and receive calls over your internet connection. If you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is then converted back at the other end.

Connecting a VoIP converter box is easy if you already have a broadband connection and network router. You simply plug your phone into the converter box, and then the box into your router.

Making a call using VoIP

A few years ago, VoIP only worked from computer to computer. Of course, you can use it this way, but VoIP has been further developed into a telephone network in its own right. Using VoIP, you can call any phone anywhere in the world, and can receive calls with phones connected to the internet or a LAN (local area network)

While there are a number of ways that VoIP is currently being used, most individual callers fall into one of four categories: ATA, IP phones, computer-to-telephone and computer-to-computer.

1. Telephone-to-Telephone Using an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA):

The simplest way to make a VOIP phone call is through the use of ATA's sometimes called gateways. An ATA converts a standard analogue telephone signal to a digital signal that can be sent over the Internet. This adaptor allows you to hook up the phone that is already in your house, to your computer, and then your Internet connection.

This is usually pretty straightforward to install. You simply plug your standard handset into the ATA then connect the ATA to your computer or your internet connection, enabling you to make VOIP calls.

2. IP Phone-to-Telephone

It utilizes an IP Phone or a computer instead of your home phone. The IP Phone looks just like a normal phone, with all the same buttons and cradle, the only difference is that instead of having a normal wall jack connector, it has an Ethernet connector. This means, that instead of plugging in your IP phone to the wall jack like you would with a regular analog phone, it gets plugged directly into your router.

You can use a VoIP phone anywhere you have an available Internet connection and a network port.

3. PC-to-Telephone

With a computer, a software must be installed, enabling the caller to dial the telephone number of the called party,

4. PC to PC

This is the simplest and cheapest way to make use of the VOIP technology. There is usually no charge for VoIP calls made from one computer to another (peer to peer). Each computer will need to have a software telephone (or soft phone) installed, which simulates a real phone by pulling together the computer's microphone, sound card, and Internet connection. The caller must know the IP address of the called party to make the connection.
